several lucrative commissions from flickr

I’m a bit surprised that

Rebekka says “I’ve gotten several lucrative commissions directly from flickr, I’ve done one large project for Toyota in Iceland..”

Here is a story I posted yesterday that doesn’t seem lucrative for photographers.

http://www.nysun.com/article/69539

by J-F Vergel | 16 Jan 2008 18:01 | NYC, United States |
Always stupidly wondered, if Bruce had a sister, what would she be like? Now I know.

by Stupid Photographer | 16 Jan 2008 20:01 (ed. Jan 16 2008) | Holy Smokes, Holy See |
Interesting that at no point does the story mention how much money she didn’t have to spend on advertising and models, and how much money her victims were conned out of through appealing to their egos. They help generate money, she just keeps it all. All the story does is perpetuate the myth that it’s an honour to work for free..

“The participants were not compensated for their efforts. Initially, Ms. Weinstock and her contributors had to establish a level of trust”.

later

“There was one rule though: When Ms. Broom was done with the clothes, she had to send them on to the next photographer. No fair keeping the dresses, which run between $300 and $600.”

No fair indeed. The irony….the irony.

One word this time…..

“AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!’

I don’t know J-F Vergel there is something pretty suss about all this. I mean if the catalogues are all self portraits who is shooting the thing?

I have been shooting for 20 years and I have never been able to focus enough adequately on one spot to get that kinda clarity and if you look at the self portrait post JRW (who wants to be known as something completely different…) exhausted himself doing his self timer thingy.

Plus, eerily they all have the same kinda style, forgive me if I am wrong I just believe that the catalogue sounds like a great marketing PR ploy. Mind you I still reckon no-one would get paid. Check out the Mirit Weinstock website http://miritweinstock.com/ and see what you think!

And I reckon that Rebekka is a very lucky girl. I wish after so many years of shooting someone would just contact me and offer me a car commercial. Specially now- like right now- I know my landlords would be really happy!

Maybe I need to rush out and put all my photos and portfolio on Flickr- I mean I guess giving away my rights to my own images to a gigantic multinational behemoth for the chance of shooting a car commercial is no contest really is it!

by lisa hogben | 17 Jan 2008 04:01 (ed. Jan 17 2008) | sydney, Australia |
isnt she the same Flickrite who had her photos downloaded and sold in some London ‘gallery’ without her consent?

(jeesh, iceland looks nice)

by Con O'Donoghue | 17 Jan 2008 10:01 | Barcelona, Spain |
Thats the one. I’m thinking of moving to somewhere scenic like Iceland, wearing a blonde wig and falsies-do you think that would help my chances of getting a car commercial via Flickr?

The Blue Lagoon as night falls, Iceland-my current desktop photo!!

by John Watts-Robertson | 17 Jan 2008 10:01 (ed. Jan 17 2008) | somewhere, United Kingdom |
People, haven’t we stupidly covered all this before? Nobody here getting any calls from Toyota until some serious changes are made! One, shoot trees and/or nudes, drenched in and dripping safe sentimentality that will survive as wallpaper in any corporate setting. Two, slap all your crap on Flickr and gather diggs and recos. Only when Toyota is certain your smartly safe clichés appeal to Flickr’s lowest common denominator, will they lucratively offer to publish you, for as little as possible or free, with no credit, naturally. So three, get in line behind me as I dummy down first.

by Stupid Photographer | 17 Jan 2008 12:01 | Holy Smokes, Holy See |
Stupid you’re bordering on smart!

by lisa hogben | 17 Jan 2008 12:01 | sydney, Australia |
i read somewhere that the average icelander has been on television 4 times by the age of 20. or maybe it was 12. if this is repeated across other media, then very likely every 3rd person has had a photo-essay published at some point, whether or not they own a camera or know how to use it.

comparatively large media industry + tiny population – its all about numbers.

by david sutherland | 17 Jan 2008 12:01 | London, United Kingdom |
There’s no way JR’s desktop is that tidy, I’m suspicious of the proportions and the private link going back to Flickr so i did some digging around and found this lurking on his flickr site. Turns out he’s pretty serious about this career move to being a Toyota Shooting bbusty blonde in Iceland:

by Con O'Donoghue | 17 Jan 2008 12:01 | Barcelona, Spain |
Hehe-nice one Con !! :-))

by John Watts-Robertson | 17 Jan 2008 12:01 | somewhere, United Kingdom |
But when I hit the Boob job button It just goes direct to Flickr!

I was hoping for a graphic story on gender reassignment surgery, like I was thinking of doing in Bangkok!

JWR Its a RIP OFF!

God you would never think that Flickr would support deceptive imagery!

by lisa hogben | 17 Jan 2008 13:01 | sydney, Australia |
And who is George Kaplan ?
JR(Just JR-it’s a nickname, not my initials!!)

by John Watts-Robertson | 17 Jan 2008 13:01 | somewhere, United Kingdom |
:)

http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/North_by_Northwest
Kaplan is a non-existent decoy created to divert suspicion from the CIA’s actual agent in Hitchcock’s North by Northwest. And is my nom-de-Flickr (as well as getting credited for my photos in some mags i used to work for).

by Con O'Donoghue | 17 Jan 2008 13:01 | Barcelona, Spain |
So it’s a bit like Michal calling himself ‘Stupid’ then? (oops!!).

by John Watts-Robertson | 17 Jan 2008 13:01 | somewhere, United Kingdom |
ah, that’s who it is!

mmmmm…. spilt beans… mmmm….

by Con O'Donoghue | 17 Jan 2008 14:01 | Barcelona, Spain |
Just a stupid hunch !!

by John Watts-Robertson | 17 Jan 2008 14:01 (ed. Jan 17 2008) | somewhere, United Kingdom |
Please. By PM someone also assumed, erroneously, that I’m smart Alec. I’m sure they’re insulted.

by Stupid Photographer | 17 Jan 2008 14:01 (ed. Jan 17 2008) | Holy Smokes, Holy See |
Fair enough! Stupid it is then !!

by John Watts-Robertson | 17 Jan 2008 14:01 | somewhere, United Kingdom |
Stoop, does that mean you’re not Jimmy Hoffa? Damn, there’s five bucks I’m never going to see again

by Akaky | 17 Jan 2008 14:01 | New York , United States |
Even if Stupid is Michal Daniel it’s up to him what name he wants to go under and nothing to do with me. I’m off to flagellate myself with wet birch twigs then go to bed with no dinner.

by John Watts-Robertson | 17 Jan 2008 14:01 | somewhere, United Kingdom |
Stupid.. don’t get dumb on us! Please!
Con I have delicious receipe.
Akay, keep the fiver
John.. I’m ordering pizza to your door.

by Ana Elisa Fuentes | 17 Jan 2008 15:01 | Bavaria, Germany |
I thought Mr. Daniel was rather absent recently. Perhaps he hasn’t been after all. Hmm! If it is indeed Mr. Daniel, I’m glad you’re still with us.

by Paul Treacy | 17 Jan 2008 17:01 | New York City, United States |
Ask him if he’s stupid, instead of believing smart guesses or stupid counter claims.

by Stupid Photographer | 17 Jan 2008 18:01 (ed. Jan 17 2008) | Holy Smokes, Holy See |
I dont know why everyone is piling on Stoop for being Stupid; dont the pseudonymical among us have rights too?

by Akaky | 17 Jan 2008 22:01 | New York , United States |
ok, ok, ok…..........(sorry Stupid):

CONFESSION!

Stupid’s my Pa, NOW BACK OFF!....let him be…

There is more to this “success story” than one would think. Yes she got the cal to do ads for Toyota in Iceland and they where posted and published al over ICELAND, but did not go any further so she has not made it big time. She is on the other hand very good at promoting here self.

Stupid is not far from hitting the nail on the head.

To all of you who have been thinking about moving to Iceland, this desktop photo from Iceland shows the Ugly commercial part of Iceland. There are more natural spots that are much more beautyful :Þ

Lots of haterade here. God forbid anybody make money in photography by doing something other than chasing Magnum. “Her success is my defeat.” Oh brother…

by Tommy Huynh | 26 Jul 2008 16:07 (ed. Jul 26 2008) | San Antonio, United States |
This is why photographers should only speak about the ‘meaning’ of their work and their own importance in creating it AFTER their work is widely held in high critical regard (or, best, in a posthumous note).

A Photo Editor, I think, once talked about photographers shooting themselves in the foot by talking ‘art.’
